What is the Renters’ Rights Bill?

The Renters’ Rights Bill is now law.

Here’s what it means for you:

If you’re a renter…

Big changes are coming to protect your rights. You’ll be protected through bans on ‘no-fault’ evictions, caps on rent increases and stronger standards for your home. You’ll also have the right to end your tenancy with just 2 months’ notice and landlords can’t refuse you based on having children or receiving benefits. A new Ombudsman will help resolve your complaints quickly and fairly.

If you’re a landlord…

Expect a shift in how you manage properties. Section 21 evictions are gone, rent increases are capped and repossession grounds are being strengthened. You’ll need to plan ahead, especially if selling or reclaiming a property for personal use. The new rules aim to balance tenant protection with landlord rights.

Your property may be repossessed if you do not keep up repayments on your mortgage. Not all Buy to Let Mortgages are regulated by The Financial Conduct Authority.
